Summer field investigation in PinLin

This summer the beautiful sunny time, but, it was really pity that I was not in Taiwan with my fly fishing friends. My good friends, Wesley and Kenny, having known each other over ten years, had a field investigation scheme for examining the preservative creek-Jin Gua Liao in Pinlin. This scheme is mainly for three purposes.

This first is to examine the result of couple years protection of this creek. This creek has been preserved for many years, therefore, the local government tended to comprehend if the number of fish increases and fishes in this creek grow healthily.

Secondly, local government is willing to realise the extent of which the outerfishes intrusion in this creek. Becasue this creek is the origin of Emerald reserviour, the ladyfish which does not belong to this water area goes up into this small creek in raining season. Ladyfish is a innate predator, which seeks small fishes and shrimps in the creek or reserviour. In the downstream of Jin Gua Liao creek thousand of small fishes and shrimps have been hunted by ladyfish, which causes the eco system in downstream seriously unbalanced. Thus, we intend to know the ladyfish spreads to what section in this creek.

Finally, finding out the proper solution of removing the intrusive fish, the ladyfish, is the most important purpose. Like I mentioned before, the eco system in the downstream water is seriously unbalanced. In order to rebuild the healthy and complete eco system, removing ladyfish from this creek becomes a major mission. How we design a fish regulation to remove this fish is our central concept. However, this is a hot potato due to lack of legislation, which causes us difficulty to implement the plan of removing the intrusive fishes. Although the local government agree with the idea of removing the ladyfish, non-legal legislation makes us very frustrated to remvoe the intrusive fish. Now the only thing we can do is using different fishing approach to catch it, then, counting the number of it. Further we can use the sampling result to infer the whole grop of ladyfish.
